The Golden Compass: A Transmedia Journey

It's All About the Story.

Transmedia storytelling is described as narrative that is developed for and across different types of media. One of the most common examples are movie adaptations of books. This could also include fan fiction, video games, comic books and a myriad of other ways to further mold the story. As a story moves through different types of media, it's pretty much unavoidable that the story must change in various ways to fit the new media. Scenes are cut out to make it shorter for film, substories are created to build coloring books or computer games. However, what also changes is the impact that the story has. Just by changing the way the story is told can substantially alter how it is received by an audience.

The Golden Compass is a prime example of this. In an industry where book-movie adaptation is becoming an increasingly popular trend, The Golden Compass went through the typical stages of transmedia storytelling. A screenplay written based on a book, which turned into a movie, which gave birth to a video game. The story changes in various ways from the books to the big screen to the video game as it inevitably must. Perhaps more interesting than the changes themselves, are the different reactions that resulted from each form of media. Each form has its own unique way of reaching an audience, and this affects how widespread the story can go and how it is received.
